NL: Tell us about your book.
Lisa: In a small, Virginia town where fly-fishing is the favorite pastime and Hampton Steel is essentially the only employer, Associate General Counsel Livi Miller believes she has reached the top rung of Hampton Steel’s corporate ladder. With her alcoholic boss retiring soon, Livi is the presumptive heir to Hampton Steel's general counsel position. However, in the midst of proving herself promotion-worthy, Livi's high school sweetheart, Jake Cooper, returns from Iraq and causes long-lost butterflies to alight in Livi’s emotionally charged stomach. The resulting loss of her promotion to slimy newcomer Edward Winston combines with her rekindled feelings for Jake to place Livi on track to choose between her career and her heart.
If she chooses Hampton Steel, she saves her hometown. If she chooses Jake, she saves her butterflies as well as herself.
NL: I'm a huge fan of high school sweetheart stories. :) You’re a lawyer. Your heroine, Levi Miller, is also a lawyer, right? There’s a saying in the writing community that says “write what you know.” Does it apply here?
Lisa: Absolutely. In The Laws of Love, the protagonist, Livi Miller is a corporate attorney who has a hard time balancing her love life with her career. I can totally relate to that aspect of Livi’s life. Being single and trying to have a career was not easy. Maybe that is why I did not get married until I was thirty-four years old.
NL: Tell us about your journey to publication. How did you decide to
Lisa: I have always loved writing. I started writing poetry and short stories in elementary school and just never stopped. The Laws of Love is the first novel I ever attempted and was more of a learning experience than anything. The publishing industry is fascinating but at times depressing. I can’t tell you how many times my novel was rejected and it got to the point I could predict what they would say: “Nice writing but too short”. It is only 53,000 words so eventually I just moved on to another, longer novel and chalked it up to experience. But then I heard that Crimson Romance was looking for romance novels with around
50,000 words. I dusted off the query letter and submitted it and within a few weeks Jennifer contacted me. I was thrilled! But what makes this experience even better are the wonderful people I have met. The network of authors and editors at Crimson Romance are the most supportive group I have ever been with. I am learning so much from them, I only hope I can return the favor one day. We all love romance, which by definition requires a happy ending, so it really is a team effort making each other’s happy endings come true!
NL: Tell us about you. Married? Children? Day job? Love where you live?
Lisa: Married to a wonderful man who makes me laugh every day. We are blessed with two great kids who love to laugh as much as we do. During the day I am an attorney so writing is a huge part of my day job as well – just not with as many happy endings! We live in Southwest Virginia with mountains, woods, lakes, rivers, and the best people around. I am truly blessed.
NL: Sexiest Man Alive.
Lisa: Tough one. I know I should say my husband, but he would laugh himself to death over that one. I guess my sexiest man alive vote could range anywhere from Hugh Jackman
to Robert Pattinson. Any skinny brunette, preferably with high cheekbones and an
Australian/English/Irish/Scottish accent. I like actors that play strong, protective roles. Wimps are not even on my radar.
NL: <sigh> Who doesn't love men with high cheekbones and an accent? :)
